After a very short jaunt in Vienna, its now time to head to my next destination, somewhere I am extremely excited to see. I am flying with Finnair again, and it will be the last time I do so. The reason being, continuing to charge a high price for a seat, even when checking in online 24 hours before the flight. Every other airline I have flown, allows passengers to select from the remaining available seats for free this close to the flight departure. Here is my travel day Vienna to Tallinn Estonia via Helsinki.
Vienna VIE
Baggage drop is my first task and completely automated at Vienna Airport. Numerous airlines including Finnair have self serve counters, where you simply rock up, scan your boarding pass, place your suitcase on the scale and your tag is printed. You now simply apply the tag yourself, put the case back onto the belt and it’s absorbed into the bowels of the airport.
Through security, I check out the food options and select my meals for the day. To begin I have a croissant and coffee from Henry’s, for a total of almost €10 and purchase a vegetarian sandwich for the flight for the same price. Food is extortionate as in most airports these days. A single small slice of pizza is €9.90 for example.
Vienna to Helsinki
Hopping on the Airbus A320, I’m excited to get this travel day moving. Because of the cost of the seats, I was not able to book the windows this day, so I have been assigned the isle on both flights. No views for me, but that’s ok the weather looks grim. This flight is 2.5 hours long and I spend that time playing games on my phone to distract me from the boredom.
Helsinki HEL
An airport I raved about on a previous travel day, today it is crowded as all heck and doesn’t grab me in quite the same way. 😂 I have a couple of hours to walk around and enjoy seeing the local shops and their products. Before long its time to head to the gate for my final flight of the day.
Helsinki to Tallinn
Flying on a prop plane now, an ATR72, wow does this ever bring back memories. Its so loud! 😂 This flight is only half an hour, just a jump across the pond and is over before it even began.
Tallinn TLL
Arriving into this small airport, the experience is so different than the larger ones. The terminal is reminiscent of a large wooden house and the distances inside are insignificant. My luggage arrives with speed and I’m out the door quickly.
I take a Bolt to my Airbnb; the ride is about fifteen minutes at a cost of €14.90. I am located in a residential district and inside the most authentic, century old wooden house. Utterly charming but not without its quirks, smells and noises. I am absolutely thrilled to be in Tallinn, the old town is calling to me and I cannot wait to hit the streets and begin my explorations.
