This morning my walk took me to the market of course, its Sunday after all, and the local market was in full swing my 8:30am. There seemed to be more stalls today, perhaps because it was the first one of the New Year. If you are new to the colonias area, this eclectic & exciting Sunday market in Puerto Morelos is located at the corner of Ave. Timon and Calle 7. You can actually enter from a variety of streets, but if you are unfamiliar with the town, a taxi can take you to this intersection and you will see the market right there.
Fruit & Veg
My first stop was to peruse the fruit and vegetable stalls. The local farmers bring in some amazing and fresh as can be produce. There is a stall that has the fruit pre-cut and wrapped, ready to eat there or take home to enjoy.
I was purchasing some ingredients for dinner, so I went to a larger stall that had a bounty of gorgeous, fresh and ripe produce.
Clothing
If you are in need of clothing, there are numerous options at this market. Much of the clothing is second hand, however there are various new items such as lingerie, work clothes, basketball jerseys, graphic T-shirts and quite a few shoe options.
Hungry?
What market wouldn’t be complete without food? Besides the fresh produce, there is an agua fresca stand. These are large jugs of fresh juice, sometimes combinations of flavours, ice cold and delicious. You would purchase this by the cup full. These drinks can safely be consumed by visitors, the ice is all produced in a commercial plant. For eats, today I saw fresh hotcakes and coffee, a fragrant cook top warming up large thick onion type savoury pancakes. And of course there are taco, tostada and torta stands.
Saving the Best Til Last
And the best thing I saw this morning? A stall selling tropical fish! Right on the sidewalk. This lovely couple had so many varieties of sea creatures in their tanks. All sorts of sweet fish, big snails, lobster type guys, and aquatic plants.
Every time I visit this diverse market, I find and see things that I have never encountered before. It really is a fun experience. The vendors are exceedingly friendly. The music is playing, kids are enjoying themselves with their mates. The opportunity to see a local community in its element is often at a market.
