Most tourists who visit this little surfing town will rent a scooter or more likely a golf cart to get around town. Especially if they are staying outside the downtown core. However the North American immigrants who reside here, have some pretty rad vehicles. VW bugs & buses, the best rides in Sayulita that match the vibe of the town are fairly common. Here are some of my favourites.
Golf Carts
Like many other small communities in Mexico where there is a huge number of tourists in a relatively small area, golf carts have become a perfect mode of transport. Here in Sayulita, they are everywhere! Carts are bombing around here and there, even down the Punta de Mita highway! It is not uncommon to see them overflowing with passengers, bumping along the cobblestone streets with big smiles on their faces. Needing a rental? Town Around has great feedback and service.
VW Bugs
I have so much nostalgia for these vehicles. The first car my ex and I owned was a bright red bug. The old ones are so utterly adorable and really quite prevalent here in Mexico. Although I have to say, that I see so many that are sitting by the side of the road collecting dust, than are kept in good driving condition. Its a shame really, and makes me a bit sad when I see a derelict. Here are some pics of the cuties.
And here are a couple of the dust collectors.
VW Buses
If there ever was an older vehicle more suited to the surfer lifestyle, I don’t know what it is. Every time I see a bus here they fit the vibe sooooo perfectly. I just love them to pieces. Most of the buses I see are kept in fairly good nick, not too many rusting by the side of the road.
There is such a mix of vehicles here in town. Delivery trucks flow through the streets non stop from dawn until dusk. Taxi’s and taxi vans are also prevalent. Motorcycles and every type of bike that resembles one are also on the streets in force. The congestion of vehicles can get pretty bad in the down town core and parking is at an absolute premium.
Me, I love the old Vdubs, there is just something so happy and charming about them. Every time I spot one in good shape I have to detour to get a photo. They represent youth, fun and a level of carefree-ness that seems to evaporate with age.
Happy travels folks! 🙂
