Modica is known as the city of 100 churches. As you walk through the various neighbourhoods, you will see these old buildings, many of which are now closed. There are three however that garner the largest amount of attention, for they are grand, extraordinary and in full service. The three big churches of Modica are as follows:

Chiesa di San Pietro

Starting with the lowest church, the one closest to the main road through town, Corso Umberto 1. St Peters is located in Modica Bassa and most tourists will see this church if they wander even a small portion of the tourist area of the city.

The exterior is stunning, an amazing example of Sicilian baroque architecture. The main set of steps is lined on both sides by the twelve apostles.

Inside St Peters one will find a gorgeous blue and white domed ceiling with multiple chandeliers, paintings and of course religious iconography. For me, San Pietro has the most beautiful interior of all of these three churches.

Duomo di San Giorgio

The most iconic church in Modica is no doubt Saint George. Most pictures you see online of the city, will have this church somewhere in the image. She is gorgeous. Her exterior faรงade is grand including a massive staircase out front that covers several streets.

Churches of Modica – Cathedral of Saint George

The Cathedral of Saint George is considered by many locals to be the delineation between Modica Bassa and Modica Alta. Higher than St. Peters, you will have to climb stairs to reach this beauty.

What I found most special about Saint George is that you can climb the bell tower! And it is indeed incredible, not only the views but to be at this lofty height right beside the beautiful bronze bells.

The interior of San Giorgio is very pretty space. After coming from St. Peters, I found the decorative features to be a little dull in comparison. Perhaps it was only because there was less light inside? Still an amazing church and I would not hesitate to enter and explore this peaceful and cavernous space.

Chiesa di San Giovanni Evangelista

The pinnacle church at the top of Modica Alta. This church is even higher than the view point of Piazza Belvedere. St. John Evangelist is a stunning church that rises high into the sky at the top of the hill.

In the early morning light, she absolutely glows and is one of the first buildings to see the rising sun each morning. In front is a long and wide stone staircase lined with statues.

The interior of St. Johns Ev. is currently undergoing renovations. I was able to go inside, however most of the decorative features have been painted in a coat of white. Many of the paintings have been removed from the frames and are undergoing restoration.

Sometimes in Europe I can feel a little โ€˜churched-outโ€™. There are just so many to see, and if I donโ€™t pace myself, they all start to blur together after a while. These three churches in Modica however, are worth a visit if you have the time to spare. They all represent a beautiful period in history and are a fine example of the baroque style.
