Those who have had the opportunity to visit Puerto Vallarta will most likely be familiar with the most iconic church in PV – Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Every time I visit this beautiful sun kissed city, I walk by the church on my first full day. For me, this church is the quintessential symbol of Puerto Vallarta. Located across the street from the town square and just up from the Malecon board walk, this stunning building rises over the area.
The History
Very briefly, on the site where the church is located, there was constructed a small parish built in 1903. By 1920 the foundations of the church we see today were laid. Construction continued on through the years and the main tower was completed in 1952. It wasn’t until 1963 however that the iconic crown was laid atop. The stunning crown is an exact replica of that worn by the wife of the Emperor of Mexico between 1864 and 1867. Today’s crown is actually the third one the church has worn. The first deteriorated from erosion and the second was damaged by an earthquake.
Exploring the Church
When you are at the church, you will get a magnificent view and photo opportunities from the main town square out front. You can walk the path up to the front entrance and go inside to see the serene and quaint interior lit by multiple stained glass windows. Don’t forget to turn around and look back through the beautiful wrought iron entry doors. There is a landing outside and to the left of the main entrance where you will see beautiful stained glass windows up close and also a vestibule with a smaller tower and cross.
A favourite view of mine, but one often missed by visitors can be had from the street behind the church. I simply walk to the end of the block and up a little hill and down the road behind. You will see a magnificent bright yellow dome. Against the bright azure sky, this vision is stunning. Wait there for a few minutes and you will be sure to hear the bells ring, it is a truly lovely experience.
On every trip to PV, I always end up with sooooo many photographs of this iconic church! It is picturesque and photo worthy from sunrise to sunset, I just can’t get enough of its beauty. I hope you enjoy the church as much as I do on your next visit to this amazing city.
