Oh what a fun market in Rome! And it is open every day of the week but Sunday’s. Here you will find food, fruit and vegetables, condiments, pasta, flowers and souvenirs. The lively little market at Campo de Fiori is one of my all time favourite markets ever!
Brief History
I first discovered this beautiful market on my previous visit in 2018. I was utterly enthralled. It is vibrant, loud, colourful and small enough that you can see everything in a relatively small amount of time.
Campo de Fiori means field of flowers, how lovely. But…..there is a gruesome past for this little plaza. In the 1600’s it was the place for executions. Today there is a monument in the centre, exactly where a philosopher named Giordano Bruno was burned alive.
Fruit & Veg
My favourite, I could peruse this bountiful offering of natures finest ingredients for ages. Everything is absolutely fresh and delicious, ready for consumption on the spot or later at home in the pot. Look at these colours!
And the variety of products! It always amazes me what I will see that I didn’t discover on a previous visit.
Meat & Cheese
Cheese lovers will be in heaven. There is a stand that has so many local varieties and the best, Parmigiano Reggiano ever! And the lovely charismatic vendor selling his cured hams is so sweet. He will vacuum seal anything for you for transport.
Condiments
There are a few vendors with all sorts of condiments, sauces, olive oils and pasta. All of which you can pack in your bags and take home to have a little taste of Italy.
Flowers
OMG, absolute eye candy and every colour in the rainbow. The spectacle and fragrance coming from this end of the market makes me swoon. I feel light headed, being surrounded by this much beauty and natures perfection.
Feeling Hungry?
The market is situated at the centre of a plaza and is surrounded by restaurants, cafés and assorted eateries. Have a seat, order some fried zucchini flowers and sip on an Aperol spritz. The people watching will keep you entertained for hours.
I cannot say enough good things about this perfect little market. Come early to watch the set up, mid morning for full action, or be present mid afternoon to watch the closing. It’s all marvellous!
