I wrote a post while in Chiang Mai, of the Thai food I have tried since arriving into this amazing country. Most of these dishes were consumed in a restaurant setting. I have also been snacking and street fooding my way through Thailand as well. Here are the best & worst Thai snack food I have eaten while here. All prices are in Canadian dollars.

Things Wrapped in Banana Leaves

These interest me. Its feels like Christmas, I never know what Iโ€™m going to find when I unwrap these little parcels. ๐Ÿ˜‚ Usually, I have been rewarded with delightful squishy rice type things.

The long ones were purchased regularly at Siri-Wattana market in Chiang Mai, and they are so good. I tried banana, taro and yam. They have been cooked on the fire so do have a slight smoky taste that I enjoy the complexity of.ย  Each cost 7 bt or $0.25 cents. Square ones are a rice with coconut and custard mixture. Very plain and sweet, pleasant but would not purchase again.

Young Coconut Pancakes

Looked like they would be amazing, had a long line at the night market. Made with shredded young coconut and rice, these were hot, gooey and a little flavourless. With some added salt I think they could be great. Cost 20 bt or $0.75 cents for 7

Mango Smoothies

Killer. Could drink them every single day in this smoking hot climate. Just mango and ice, no milk for me. I look for the cheap ones, cost is usually 30-40 bt or $1.15-1.50

Jellies

Yellow and green ones, I think are rice based. Quite plain and not overly sweet. Cost 10 bt or $0.40 cents for a bag full. Orange ones, made from egg yolk. The balls are excessively sugary, the long ones are more egg flavoured and the shredded stuff was sweet. Would not buy these again. Cost 10 bt or $0.40 cents for a box.

Banana leaf bowl jellies. Made for Chinese new years, these are plain tasting and sweet if a bit earthy, very similar to all the other jellies made from rice. Not pleasant enough to re-purchase. Cost 10 bt or $0.40 cents for two.

Tofu

Big chunks of deep-fried tofu and a muffin shaped fried thing with tofu chunks. The bag also included deep fried yam cause I chose the mixed bag. The tofu was bland, the muffin type things super greasy, I couldnโ€™t enjoy them, and the yam was yum! Cost 20 bt or $0.75 cents for a bag full.

Pork

There is so much pork eaten here, and chicken of course. I enjoyed a fried pork chop from a market and pork satayโ€™s. The satay meat was very fatty which I did not like, but the flavour was beautiful. Cost 10 bt or $0.40 cents per skewer and 30 bt or $1.15 for the pork chop.

Fried Foods

So much of the Thai street food is deep fried. I try to stay away from this as it upsets my stomach and I am super careful about that. Sometimes the treats look too good though and I cave. These sweet potato and yam balls were incredible! I had a mixed bag that included spears of banana as well and man, I ate that so fast. Cost 20 bt or $0.75 cents.

Along with these unique Thai goodies, I also have been enjoying my fair share of sushi, gyoza and things I am more familiar with that do not include deep frying. My experience with Thai food thus far has been pretty great! Most things I would not order again, but Iโ€™m certainly glad I tried them. Hereโ€™s to more delicious eats and treats as I travel around this big beautiful world, we call home.
