There are so many gorgeous murals in Mexico. It really is an art form that has been accepted here and promoted. I never tire of looking at and photographing all of the incredible street art, everywhere I travel. In this post I will show you the best Mayan murals in Puerto Vallarta.
I will stipulate that ‘best’ is relative to time in this circumstance. I have been visiting this engaging city for several years now, maybe even a decade. I have seen many murals come and go. Street art can erode quickly in this hot sticky climate. There has also been an enormous amount of construction over those years, so much of the art is destroyed . These photographs are all from this current trip.
‘Best’ is also relative to my taste of course. 🙂 But being an art lover of many styles, genres and mediums provides me the ability to showcase a large selection of photographs that I hope will give credit to this art form. This city is chock full of really extraordinary artists. It is amazing how much diversity and raw talent is here. I am continually left in awe.
Romantic Zone & Centro
Walking through the oldest parts of town, is one of my favourite pass times. There is so much character in these neighbourhoods. From wrought iron railings and window coverings, to fanciful brick work, the city comes alive with creativity. Many of the murals in these areas are on old brick walls that have been plastered over to create a smooth surface.
What secrets and stories must inhabit that elders mind.
All of these murals are absolutely huge. They generally encompass an entire wall, sometimes covering plumbing and gas fixtures, following corners and crevasses and creeping over and around doors and windows.
Fifth of December
Surprising to me, as you move further away from the touristy areas of the romantic zone and centro, the murals persist. Below are a few examples from the 5th of December neighbourhood. These are very detailed and so full of colour. The are probably each 8-9 feet high.
Because I have been taking photographs of street art for so long, I have quite a collection of images that are now gone, gone forever. This is the most heart wrenching thing with street art, it is so beautiful, but transitory in nature. It may last a few years, thousands of people will see it and enjoy it, but alas, at some point, it will vanish.
Aren’t they incredible? I am so lucky to walk around every day, surrounded by such beauty.
