I knew from limited research that there was a beach area not too far away from me. Looking into things once I arrived, I found out that Modica is indeed quite a large city, with various distinct neighbourhoods. One of these is the beach town, so today was a day trip to the beautiful beach at Marina di Modica.
Getting There
If you have a vehicle, easy peasy, just drive towards the coast from Modica and you will end up at the beach. I however, do not, so it was the bus for me. Leaving from the station in town that is right beside the tourist office, it is a 40-minute ride to the urban part of Marina di Modica. The cost of the trip was €2.10 each way.
The bus will let you off at the police station, then its only a short five-minute walk down the road to the left, towards the sea.
The Beach
I could not wait to get my shoes off and let my toes sink into the sand. Oh my, golden soft liquid sand that feels like you are walking on silken clouds! No lie. The beach is clean, the water is clear and the sand pristine.
I was able to walk the bay, down to the end of the beach where I turned around at a large resort under construction. The wet sand at the waters edge is perfectly compact for a good beach walk. Coming back, I wandered up into the sand dunes.
Dunes
Yes, not high, but beautiful wide rolling dunes with the same powdery soft sand. There are some little prickly plants in here though so watch where you trod.
I can see resorts and newer housing on the other side of the dunes, but to sit and play, looking out at the water was beautiful and so peaceful.
Swimming
I absolutely had to try the water and was so glad I did. This is a zero depth beach, meaning that you can walk in far before you are even up to your waist with water. The slope is very gradual. There are fish to see and the bottom is completely sandy, nothing scary touching your feet. 😂🦀🪸
Esplanade
After I had been for a swim and a little lay down in the sun, I wandered back up to the esplanade. Here is a nice and quite long stretch of seafront that you can stroll along and enjoy the views. There are benches and garden areas along the route.
The beach terrain becomes rocky after the dock area with the sail boats. I walked on the rocks to look in the tide pools. It is easy walking, the rocks are firm and volcanic like.
Food
Being late in the season, I noticed many of the restaurants and all of the clubs were closed down for the year. However, near the main parking lot there are a number of cafés and restaurants still open, as well as one place for drinks down on the beach.
Enjoying a coke zero and a delicious arancini, I filled my lazy mid day with people watching and peace.
I will definitely return and visit the beach again before I leave Modica. It is an easy place to get to with public transport. The beach is absolutely beautiful, pristine and not very crowded. The water is incredibly delicious feeling, quite warm still, even for a chicken like me. 🤣🤣
