Each day for me begins with a long walk. I head out early in the morning when the air is pleasantly fresh and the atmosphere is soft and dreamy. I like to imagine most people tucked away in their beds, while myself and a few other like minded souls have the world to ourselves. Today’s walk took me to the amazing beach at Puerto Morelos.

Turning Left

If you walk from the town square towards the ocean, you come to the dock where the boats depart for diving and deep sea fishing. Today I turned left and walked for about half an hour.

The beach is wide and the sand feels like silk sliding over your skin, it’s that powdery soft. The ever constant warm breeze keeps the heat from the sun at bay. There is some seaweed, however it is not the ghastly sargassum that is seen from late spring until summer.

This is a grass like seaweed, looks like pine needles and has no odour at all. It originates in the coral reefs just off the beach and is an important part of the marine habitat. The town of Puerto Morelos has a tractor out every morning, raking up the debris from the night before, so by mid morning you wont notice much at all.

As you get further away from the town, the beach becomes narrower and you will pass several areas that are undeveloped hence no clearing of seaweed. It is still easy to walk past these short stretches and is very tranquil. Today I walked a little beyond the first larger all inclusive resort called Desires. At this point the beach is very narrow and even though I was walking in the surf, I was really close to the lounge chairs set out by the resort.

Exploring

One of my greatest joys when exploring any coast line is beach combing, for anything really. This is a rare beach where I have not bent down to pick up one single thing. I have seen no shells, no coral, no sea glass, no treasures of any kind.

If you are a beach lover, like long languid walks in powdery sand under the blazing Mexican sun and enormous blue sky, you will love this beach as much as I do.
