Visit the city of Birgu with me 😁 She is one o Visit the city of Birgu with me 😁

She is one of Malta’s Three Cities, and lies across the Grand Harbour from the capital Valletta.

Birgu like the other 2 of the Three Cities, has two names. It’s also called Citta Vittoriosa and was Malta’s capital between the years of 1530-1571.

Birgu is on a peninsula and at the tip is the imposing Fort Saint Angelo.

When the Order of Saint John arrived in Malta in 1530, the knights took this land and created the Three Cities with which to live and govern the island nation.

They fought fiercely against the Ottoman Empire to maintain control. As you wander through these narrow stone streets you will see many references to the Maltese cross, the knights symbol.

Birgu is full of historical sights that include not only the fort, but the Inquisitors Palace, War Museum, 13th century Norman House and so much more.

I’ll cover things not to miss while here, the first of which is Photo 5. See those two axes with an eye in the middle? That is above one window of the house where the executioner lived. 🗡️😬 The only marking on the facade of that stone dwelling.

When I was here two years ago, Birgu seemed sleepy and quiet. Not so much anymore I’m afraid.

What a dreamy destination 🤗 For such a small c What a dreamy destination 🤗

For such a small country, there are countless things to see, experience, and be immersed in.

It’s a place one can let themselves drift, daydream and melt under that warm Mediterranean sunshine. ☀️

Oh Malta, you have my heart 🥰

These are luzzu! 😁 There are three main types These are luzzu! 😁

There are three main types of traditional wooden boats in Malta and I’ve become obsessed with each one. 🤩

Today we start with Luzzu 🚣

The luzzu (pronounced luttsu) was developed in the early 1900’s. They closely resemble the guzzu, boats that visited from Sicily in the 1880’s.

Originally these were created for transport, to move people from harbour to harbour and island to island. They held more than 20 people!

Back then, the luzzu were equipped with sails and oars. Later a motor was attached and is was at this time that they became a popular fishing vessel. 🎣

Of all of the traditional Maltese boats, these number in the largest, even though no more are being made today.

The bright colours represent which harbour the owner hails from. Most have a magenta bottom that is underwater.

Almost all have those eyes! These date from Phoenician times and protects the fisherman while at sea. 👀

The luzzu is often considered the symbol of Malta 🇲🇹

Best place to see these? Marsaxlokk or Marsascala harbours. 😁

Enjoy a little bit of Birgu in Malta 🤗 I manag Enjoy a little bit of Birgu in Malta 🤗

I managed to dodge the large tours filling these narrow streets and capture the essence of this enchanting city. 💙

Birgu is one of Malta’s Three Cities and was even the capital for about 40 years in the 1500’s. 😁

The Knights of the Order of Saint John made it their stronghold when they came to the island in 1530.

Birgu was heavily bombed during WWII and much of it destroyed, especially around the town square.

The reason for all of the tourists these days are the significant sites that remain. Fort Saint Angelo, the War Museum, Inquisitors Palace and more. 🇲🇹

I go there to wander these old stone streets and get lost in the sunlight cascading down through bougainvillea.

The colourful balconies and doors, wrought iron railings and hidden historical gems are what I find utterly charming. 🥰

To escape the crazy hoards at the market in the vi To escape the crazy hoards at the market in the village, I took off up through town and into the countryside. 😁

On the bus ride in, I had passed a fort so wanted to see if I could work my way around to that. 🏰

And I did! Through ethereal fields of wheat, one of the most calming sights for me, I followed a road and then a path to the old structure.

Fort San Lucian is a bastioned watch tower originally built by the Order of Saint John in 1611.

In the 1870’s it was rebuilt by the British and is the second largest watchtower in all of Malta. It is closed to the public but there is a path all around the backside that you can take to see the moat and all of the defensive walls.

Next I followed that same white limestone path all along the gorgeous coastline back to the village of Marsaxlokk.

It is here I came across the first of two beaches, the better one is yet to come. 🤗

This is the sleepy village of Marsaxlokk in Malta. This is the sleepy village of Marsaxlokk in Malta. 🤗

Well sleepy everyday except for Sundays 😂

Sunday is market day and it has become such a tourist hotspot, it’s uncomfortably crowded now.

Don’t fret, of course I had to check out the market, but there is lots of quiet space close by. 😁

My inner introvert that screams at me in crowded spaces, was blissful while exploring the village itself and the surrounding countryside. 😂

And I found a beach! 🏖️ pure heaven 🤩

Join me on a Sunday in the fishing village of Mars Join me on a Sunday in the fishing village of Marsaxlokk in Malta. 😁

I came for the market but have turned this into a day trip. For there is so much more to see than the market itself 🤗

Since I’m here for lunch, I’ll partake of my one and only meal out on this trip. I’ve selected Ta’Mattew as my dining venue as they have a little table tucked up the street, off the busy thoroughfare. 🤗💙

I’m super frugal but know I want something with seafood in it. So I select the least expensive option which is the Rigation Salmon and a glass of rose. 🍷

As I sit there in the warm sunshine, I can people watch to my hearts content. I am looking directly at the harbour and Sunday market that is bustling with its crowds.

My rose arrives and it is perfectly chilled. I sip it slowly so I have enough left for when my pasta arrives.

I make myself relax into the setting, bringing myself into the moment instead of letting my anxieties win the day.

My meal arrives and it is such a beautiful and simple dish. I taste my first bite and can’t believe I have been this lucky. 🥹

It’s absolutely divine. Easily one of the best pasta dishes I have ever eaten in my life. The creamy sauce is rich in garlic and tangy tomato. The small flecks of salmon are flavourful and plentiful.

The texture of the pasta would make any Italian happy. A perfect al dente 🤌

Malta is expensive. I’ve stretched my budget to the limit to be here. This one splurge meal is always a gamble. If it’s disappointing i take it hard. But this one has been anything but. 😁

How lucky am I? Sitting here in this incredible country, steeped in beauty and history. Eating an amazing bowl of pasta made just for me. 🥹

Total cost is €24 or about $37 Canadian. This is not an expensive restaurant, merely a representation of the cost of dining out here in Malta.

Welcome to Marsaxlokk Malta on a Sunday. 😁 The Welcome to Marsaxlokk Malta on a Sunday. 😁

The crowds of tourists will come for the weekly market, but there is so much more to this village. 🤗

If I can offer any advice, it’s to leave the market to the hoards, and escape into the countryside. After wandering through fields of wheat and sunflowers, find the old fort. 🌾

Then walk back along the white cliffs overhanging that azure Mediterranean Sea, back to the bay.

Again escape the market by walking past it to the other side of the harbour and become enamoured with those beautiful little wooden fishing boats 🤗

Now go and find a glass of chilled wine and soak up the warm Maltese sun ☀️ 🤗 Bliss

What are you doing this Sunday?
