Local Market
If you are a market lover like myself, the Sunday market in the colonias of Puerto Morelos is not to be missed. Each Sunday, is a fair sized, open aired market that generally operates between the hours of 9am-2pm. Set up under the shade of the trees and along the sidewalks are individual stalls selling a variety of goods and products. Using the Chedraui as your land mark, walk down Calle Chaca past the first big street of Av. J. Zetina Gasca to the next big street called Ave. Timon. Take a left here and you will walk right into the market.
This is a local market that wanders down little alleys and avenues. Don’t worry, you won’t get lost, it is really quite a small area. You will be amazed at the variety of products to see. If you are feeling hungry, there are numerous food vendors, many with long lines so you know what they are creating is tasty!
There is a lot of used clothing and household products for sale. Kind of like an open air thrift shop! If its fruits or vegetables you need you will find plenty here. These stalls were doing a brisk business when I last visited. All of the products looked amazing, ripe, fragrant and ready to eat.
Many new items are available too, such as kitchen and household products, electronics, tools, toys or new clothing.
Wandering through markets around the world is one of my favourite pastimes. Everywhere I travel, without exception, one of the first things I investigate are the markets. The tourist markets with trinkets and such can be fun and lively. The artisan markets can be amazing and showcase an area’s rich talent. But what I really like to discover is the local markets. For me, these are where I can get the true flavour of an area or region. I’m always amazed at the variety of foods, crafts and products that I have never seen before.
The first time I visited the Puerto Morelos market, I saw an unfamiliar drink concoction. The stall was a simple table, covered with assorted large bottles of bubbly pop, all flavors and colours of the rainbow. There were also numerous containers of gummy candies and various flavoured spice mixes. I don’t have a picture of the drink but I will try to describe it. What the customers were given, was a large clear plastic cup, probably about 30oz. It was filled with what ever combinations of soda’s they requested. The rim was heavily dusted with crystallized spices and unlike a cesear that has vegetables and shrimp at the top, this drink was covered in gummy candies! Like a lot of them. My teeth were hurting from the thought of that sugar mother load. But admiring the drink itself, it would be any child’s best prize at the town fair. From the bright colour to the animation of the gummies, the beverages were beautiful!
Enjoy your markets peeps!
