Being an avid photographer of doors, windows doesn’t come as much of a stretch. Normally, I gather a few pictures of windows as I travel, but here I have amassed lot! There are just so many beautiful windows in Plovdiv.
Decoration
Many of the buildings here in the city are incredibly decorative. Having such a lengthy history, the city now is full of beautiful architecture at every turn. From the old Ottoman buildings to the Industrial Revolution and Bulgarian Revival, the styles are vast and interesting.
Iron Work
Most of the windows here have some type of iron work covering the glass, for safety, but the decorative aspect has been taken to the next level. After admiring the metal work on the doors and fences, it is no wonder the windows carry this feature as well.
Plaster Work
The older buildings, older than the soviet era that began at WWII, have detailed and ornate plaster work. From Art Deco, to Art Nouveau, the embellishment around the windows and façade is extreme in some cases. This lends to windows that are very unique, especially when multiple colours are added to the exterior as well.
Bulgarian Revival
Bulgarian Revival architecture is prominent in old town, and these buildings can have heavily embellished windows. In fact, these houses have many windows, and often the flat plaster exterior has been painted with all sorts of glorious detailing.
Staying in Plovdiv for several weeks this summer has given me the chance to find a new passion for my photography, that being windows. Not only do I scrutinize doors when I pass a building, I now pause and look at all of the windows too.
