Walking from Rincon de Guayabitos to Los Ayala can be accomplished up on the road, however there is absolutely no sidewalk and in many places not even a foot of gravel at the side of the pavement. There is however, a shortcut through the jungle to Los Ayala that will at least cut off a little of the sketchy roadway passage.
Leaving Guayabitos by the road
This is the most direct route out of town and towards Los Ayala. The village of Los Ayala is not far away from the most southern end of Guayabitos, perhaps only 20 minutes by foot. The roadway will take you up on over the hill and into the little town. The problem with the roadway is that there is little to no shoulder. In one place you are even walking along a fallen guard rail.
Keep walking up the hill, just follow the road. There is always a place for your feet, it will just have to be creative in spots. 🙂
At a certain point, about 15 minutes in, you are going to notice a little dusty path into the jungle. Take this path. This is your shortcut to get off the roadway and into a safer space. It will feel strange at first. Then you will think you are in someones back yard, but it comes out onto a road fairly quickly. Follow that road down and you will be at the beach! Hurray you made it!
One other sneaky shortcut
If you want to try and find this place, you will cut off the first section of roadway walking. You will still end up walking beside the road at one point though, and its the sketchiest point unfortunately.
There is a cheeky shortcut right from in town however it can be a little tricky to find. Here are two pictures of the area so you can see where you would need to be to find that path.
Don’t worry if you cannot find that particular piece of the shortcut. The first time I went, I simply took the main road out of town which this first shortcut joins up with anyways.
Los Ayala Village
Lost Ayala is a little fishing village and can be very busy with national tourists on the weekend. To me it was exactly like Rincon de Guayabitos, but maybe a 10th of the size. If you have already spent time in Guayabitos, you will see the similarities right away. There is a catch of fish brought in each day on the beach and the vendors are selling the same food and trinkets.
I had a walk around town to see if there was anything that stood out to make it different from its larger neighbour.
There are new and older buildings, little hotels, small resorts and only a few roads that make up this village. It is sweet but definitely a tourist hot spot.
The Beach
A miniature of the big Guayabitos beach for sure. A nice place to spend an afternoon, having a walk, partaking in a bevvie on the sand, and enjoying the local snacks. It’s really lovely to watch the local families in the water, having so much fun.
Finding the Way back to Guayabitos
Once you have finished with your visit, or if you are staying in Los Ayala and want to head over to Guayabitos, you will return the way you came.
Go back to the road that you found yourself on when you came out of the jungle. Walk up to the top and into the jungle back onto that little dusty path. When you come out onto the roadway, just be sure to stay as far away from the pavement as you can. I had a large tour bus pass me and if he was not able to move over when he did, I would only have been about two feet away from him.
The Best Part?
The view looking into the bay at Guayabitos beach from the top of the hill! Wowzers!
I hope someone finds these photo’s helpful. The little walking trip into Los Ayala is definitely worth it. The walk is not difficult, just be aware of your footing like always. Happy hiking amigos.
