I read about a pedestrian bridge that would take me from the south side of Plovdiv to the north side. Eager to explore another district in the city, I set out. What I discovered was a covered bridge that looks like a train and is in fact nicknamed ‘The Train’ by the residents. Not only can you walk across the Maritsa River, but you can do your shopping on ‘The Train’ bridge.

Shopping on 'The Train' Bridge

Pedestrian Friendly

Plovdiv boasts the longest pedestrian only shopping street in all of Europe. ‘The Train’ makes up the last portion of this 1750 meter long stretch. One of the reasons I’m really enjoying Plovdiv, is how pedestrian friendly it is. Walking the streets, I frequently find marked crosswalks, and the vehicles actually stop for me to cross.

The Bridge

The official name is the Saedinenie Bridge and it was completed in 1986. Originally it was not covered and was used for pedestrians only, but in case of emergency, it could be used by vehicles as well. Later on, it was covered and turned into a shopping plaza. At this time, it was nicknamed ‘The Train’ as seen from afar, it certainly looks like a series of train cars.

Shopping

When I walked to the bridge, I was expecting an open bridge, of which I was planning to see and photograph the river. I found the opposite. 😂 I could not get a glimpse of the Maritsa River at all, with the exception of a little nook that I found at one end to take a photo.

Walking into the space, it feels like you are entering a tunnel. Lined on either side are various unique shops. As I walked through, I thought, wow, I could pretty much find anything I needed here!

Cool food shop
Gotta return here and explore

Available was clothing, shoes, food, electronics, luggage, a travel agency, candy store, and various other boutique and obscure finds.

I could tell I was entering an area with less tourist activity. I was receiving more looks than I have gotten on the other side of the river.

The River

Once I had crossed the bridge, I attempted to find a place to walk beside the river to enjoy the scenery. This did not pan out either. It seems, at least in this area, the river is not enjoyed as a scenic place of rest and relaxation. I could only get close to the water in one area, and it was fairly run down and a little unpleasant.

I will endeavour to explore the river further, for there must be a place where it has been treated in such a way for people to enjoy its beauty. I know there is a rowing club further up one side, perhaps there I will find the space I am seeking. It was a fun morning exploring an area new to me. I will definitely return to go further afield.
