Oh to be back on the Caribbean side of Mexico again! This time exploring Puerto Morelos – The Seaside Town. I’m walking this area in depth and with the intention of seeing if this spot would warrant a longer stay for me in the future.

There are two main parts to Puerto Morelos, the more tourist centric area near the sea and the Colonias which are mostly on the other side of the highway that runs from Cancun to Playa del Carmen. I have only just begun my explorations so this is merely my first impressions. As I explore the area more extensively, I’ll write about further findings.

Part Uno – The seaside town – First Impression

The seaside area consists of three longer streets that run parallel to the shore. In the middle is a main square that is beautifully decorated for Christmas. Just across from the square is a charming little church.

This beach side part of PM feels like how I imagined Bucerias was about 15 years ago, long before all of the current construction of 4/5 story complexes. It is quaint and friendly and has many delicious looking restaurants and niche eateries. The beach is silky soft white sand and while I haven’t snorkelled yet, I hear it is terrific just off the main beach area.

A visitor will find all of their needs met in this district. For groceries, there is a well stocked, smaller sized Chedraui Select just off the square. Here you will find products with familiar brands, a wide selection of produce, a bakery and an adult beverage section. There is even a cafe area with a wine bar and a stand of Krispy Kreme Donuts.

Down the three longer streets are a variety of hotels, colourful houses, a school, lavanderias, juice stores, pharmacies etc. The streets are easy to walk with sidewalks, large trees for shade and a myriad of smaller businesses to capture your attention. Enjoy the bookstore, clothing stores, flea market, art galleries and gift shops, all within an easy walk of one another.

If you come to the area for a week or two you will have a lovely time bathing in the warm turquoise waters, dining at some fabulous establishments and spending your lazy days in the sun walking through a charismatic little town.
