I have an affinity for these particular vehicles. Old VW bugs, beetles & vocho’s if you will. My ex-husband and I’s first car was a bright red bug. We were young and carefree and this vehicle suited us perfectly at the time. We were living in Vancouver and it was easy to navigate the city in that little car. I have to say though, it was somewhat unreliable and put us in a predicament or two over the years that we owned it!

None the less, I still find these vehicles so charming. Here in Puerto Morelos, to my surprise, I have noticed more than just a few. Some are fairly beaten up and in disrepair, others have been turned into dune buggy or race cars. And then there are the ones that have been kept like ours was, bright and pretty and well cared for.

The outdoor adventure vocho’s

I have seen more than a few vocho’s like these in the photo’s. They remind me of an old movie that I used to love watching called “Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo“.

The Classic Bug

Then there are the classic looking bugs. Bright clean happy colours.

And more beetles!

These are just a fraction of the beetles in Puerto Morelos. This is a fairly small fishing village. I have to wonder if the number of bugs here, is indicative of VW beetles in the rest of Mexico? They really add to the ambience here, which is so quaint and quirky. If you have the opportunity to visit Puerto Morelos, do have a walk around, especially in the colonias and enjoy these lovely old vehicles.
