I’ve posted about Old Nessy and the beautiful beaches, but what about New Nessebar and the area? Well, it seems there are actually two areas, one I’ll refer to as New, which is the closest to the old town, and then New New which is actually newly built.
Old Nessebar
Old Nessy was actually an island that was first settled in the 6th century BC by the Thracian’s. After that it changed hands many times going from Greeks to Romans to Ottomans and such. At some point in history, an isthmus was built connecting it to the mainland. I have seen old black and white photos and this land bridge was in those photos from way back when.
I guess when the island got too crowded, people made their way to the mainland to reside.
That brings us to New Nessebar
New Nessy
I have walked this area quite a bit. When I first arrived, I was expecting it to actually be new, but that is not the case. Most of the buildings look like they were built within the last 100 years and most of those probably within the last 60 years.
Almost all are 3 to 5 story small apartment type buildings. There are very few individual houses. And of course the seaside is lined with a row of big hotels at Nessebar South beach too.
The town includes schools, hospitals, shopping and restaurants, all of the things one would expect in any small town. What is apparent though, is that this is a resort town. Many of the stores are catering to the summer visitors, and are filled with souvenirs, inflatable toys, sunscreen and the like.
New New Nessy
Once you reach the edge of New Nessebar, there is a large section of sand dunes that are fenced off. I’m not sure if this is private or public land, but it is quite a big area and there is no roads through it. Behind this land, is what I am referring to New New Nessy. An area full of 4 and 5 story apartment buildings, probably constructed within the last 20 years and many more under construction currently.
Here are small shops scattered through this big neighbourhood, like corner stores, the odd coffee shop, bakery and produce stand. I have even seen a salon or two. It is definitely a residential area. Being the newest part of town, the city has provided green spaces and a lovely new fitness area. Included here is an outdoor gym, tennis courts, basketball court, soccer field and biking lanes.
The sidewalks are pretty good compared to the other parts of Nessy. You have probably guessed this is where I am located and it has been the perfect location for me to spend the month. Away from the tourists and hustle and bustle, yet I can walk to Nessebar South beach in only 10 minutes.
If you decide to visit Nessebar or the area, any of these three neighbourhoods is good. All are within walking distance of each other. All are close to amazing beaches and all have access to groceries, restaurants and café’s. I really like Nessebar, it feels good and safe here. Relaxed and home-like.
