I am thrilled to be exploring this part of the world again. Last year at a similar time, I was in Jordan and had an exceptional experience there. It quickly became one of my all-time favourite countries. Now I find myself being reminded of that trip and it is such a pleasure. Here are my first impressions of Muscat Oman.

Quiet!
One of the things my Airbnb host pointed out on the drive from the airport, was how there is virtually no vehicular honking. And its true! As I walk down the streets, busy and chaotic or not, there is very little, if any car horns. Once you notice that, it is rather extraordinary.

The thing I do hear with regularity, five times per day, is the Islamic call to prayer. Something I thoroughly enjoy, particularly here. You see I have travelled to places before, where the call has been a recording emanating from the minaret speakers. Here though, each mosque has a human making the call. There are hundreds of mosques in the city, and each one begins at a slightly different second. The effect is a rather slow build up to the crescendo, and then an equally slow dismantle. Absolutely magical.
Scenic
One is instantly in awe of the scenery here. The City of Muscat is a coastal one, spread out across the land. Directly behind it and affecting its layout is the Hajar Mountain range. These rocky giants are the backdrop to every area of the city, no matter where you find yourself. Paired with the crystal-clear sea and white washed buildings, the scene that appears before you is simply stunning.

Friendly
Its not often I travel to a destination where the locals are this open and friendly. Every person I have contact with, returns my greeting of ‘As-salamu alaykum’ with a smile. Most are curious to ask where I am from and if I like their country. Even the municipal workers, street cleaners for example, and staff everywhere say hello to me. This simple act stands out because it is so rare.
Clean
Most of the main public areas are exceedingly clean. Yes, I can explore down small alleys and find rubbish, overflowing garbage bins and the red stains of paan spit just about everywhere. But the larger places where the visitors are, are very well kept. It seems the city goes to great lengths to beauty their capital, creating lots of parks, green spaces and adorning these with a myriad of flowers.

Weather
Absolutely terrific at this time of year. Most days are sunny with a slight haze that seems to clear around midday. The temperatures are just above mid 20’s and there is usually a slight breeze. Heading out doors early in the morning to explore the boardwalk, marina or beaches is refreshingly cool. I am seeing like minded locals doing the same, getting in some exercise before the temperatures increase.

Muscat is a beautiful city with so much to see and do. I am eager to begin really exploring, the older parts especially. Luckily this area is where I am spending the first part of my visit, in the Mutrah. Come with me, we will discover the character and charm of this enchanting part of the world together!
