Wow. I’m in love. โค๏ธ Looking out the car windows on the ride from the airport, I knew I had made a great choice in visiting this country. I have been here a few days now, here are my first impressions of Malta.

My first impressions of Malta

The Buildings

Most structures are made of huge limestone blocks ranging from ivory to a deep warm caramel colour. Depending on the age of the buildings, these blocks can be quite pitted and even crumbling.

The facades of the buildings range from plain to ornate. Many have statues on the corner precipices. The residential buildings have the most beautiful, and I mean beautiful wooden balcony encased windows that jut out from the fascia. Many have been painted bold colours to match the large front doors. Together with the limestone, it makes such a old world charming vista.

Buildings are decorated with religious icons and walking along at street level it is very common to see windows with the sole purpose of displaying religious statues and icons to passers by.

The People

Every single person I have met has been warm and welcoming. At first they glance at me, seemingly waiting for me to make the first move. As soon as I say โ€˜Bonjuโ€™ (good morning in Maltese) I get a lovely grin or smile and the friendliness comes forth.

From the grocer who lets me taste the cheeses before I choose one, to the pie seller who comes out of his shop to explain what each item is, the people are absolutely lovely. I am staying in a non-tourist area and I am so very happy I chose this setting. I have been enveloped by my neighbours in a few short days and it feels amazing.

The Weather

Blue skies mostly, dotted with white puffy clouds. Mild temperatures, between 17-20 degrees celcius each day. No rain yet but perhaps a sprinkle today. I have been starting the day with a light sweater but it is quickly removed and a T-shirt is all I need for the remainder of the day.

The Food

Everything I have eaten has been of top quality and absolutely scrumptious. But I knew it would be. With influences from Italy and the Arabia’s, how could it not? The produce is as fresh as can be. Strawberries are in season and they are perfect. Bursting with flavour, and the prettiest shade of red right up to the stem.

I am so happy to be here in Malta. Easter is fast approaching and there seems to be religious happenings each and every day. It is marvellous to see and experience these beautiful events. I am truly the luckiest person in the world.
