Being situated in the Bay of Kotor, I knew I would be surrounded by all things marine. What I didn’t know is just how luxurious Porto Montenegro and marinas of Tivat actually are. I know virtually nothing about boats and boating life, but I can certainly admire the beauty of these vessels.
Porto Montenegro
The area was once an old Naval base, now turned into a destination for billionaires by a Canadian named Peter Munk. Porto Montenegro officially opened in 2006 and includes a gorgeous luxury hotel, shopping centre, cafés and restaurants and most importantly, a marina for super yachts.
PM is now owned by a Dubai investment firm, being sold in 2016. Walking through the area it does not feel ostentatious and exclusive. Perhaps that is from the friendliness of the Montenegrin people, but the port is warm and inviting.
The yachts themselves are stunningly gorgeous, kept fastidiously clean and gleaming in the warm sunshine by the crews.
I have been welcomed to walk in all areas of Porto Montenegro with the exception of one portion of the marina that is guarded.
Tivat Marina
Another large marina in the town is the Tivat Marina. Instead of a man-made marina jutting out into the Adriatic sea like its neighbour, PM, Tivat Marina is a natural tiny inlet. Here are lovely smaller boats, much more like what you would imagine in a beautiful seaside destination such as this.
Adriatic Shoreline
Not officially marinas, but all along the shoreline at Tivat, boats are moored and tied up. Most are small sailing vessels or fishing boats. They create an incredibly picturesque landscape, bobbing in the gentle sea water with the mountains towering in the back ground.
I have walked in both directions along the shore, and as far as I have managed to wander, there are boats to be found.
Perhaps the most beautiful place is up past Waikiki Beach. Here I discovered old stone curved piers in which the little fishing boats are resting while not in use. My goodness, the sight is serene and stunning.
As someone who knows so little about boats, I can only enjoy them as part of the scenery. If you are lucky enough to visit this gorgeous seaside town of Tivat, and have some knowledge of water craft, your enjoyment will blossom here.
