If South beach is just too busy for you and you have already spent time on North beach, there is another place close to town. Looking for a hidden beach to explore? Playa de Los Muertos, Sayulita’s secret beach is just a hop skip and a jump from town.
Getting There
There are two routes to this lovely little beach depending on what part of town you are coming from.
If you are in the downtown area of Sayulita, you can simply walk along Calle Pescadores to the very end. You will pass by Si Senor restaurant and then Amor Boutique Hotel. Once past the hotel, you will see a large concrete arch that is the entry for the local cemetery. Head up that sandy road, go up and over the hill and to your right you will see the beach!
If you are staying up close to or across the highway to Punta Mita, you can take the route along Ninos Heroes. Walking down NH will take you to a fork in the road with a sign on a small surf board. Take a right and this juncture. At the next fork, again take a right. You will pass by the cemetery on your right hand side, keep going straight and you will see the beach in front of you!
Playa de Los Muertos
This very small but gentle beach has dark grey, fine soft sand and is hugged in on either end with large rock boulders. The waves are gentle so swimming is a definite possibility here as there are no water craft in this small cove. Three vendors will have umbrellas and chairs set up if you wish to rent from them or simply lay your towel on the warm sand. And should you find yourself needing a beverage or snack, two permanent food stalls are located at the entrance to the beach.
Needing the facilities? You are in luck! The cemetery has clean washrooms in a large white building you cannot miss. The cost was $10 Peso’s when I was there last.
The first day I visited Los Muertos, I went early in the morning, and there were a few people walking to and from the beach. The sandy stretch itself is so small it will only take you a few minutes to walk the length. During the early afternoon this once secluded and secret beach can get quite crowded and busy with people escaping the crowds on South beach in town.
Cemetery
An interesting little walk while in this area is the local cemetery. If you have never seen a Mexican cemetery before, I encourage you to have a look. It is colourful and lovely to see how the locals are celebrating and remembering their loved ones.
Enjoy this lovely little beach for a few hours, it will be a nice detour from town. Easy to reach and safe to swim.
