There are two lighthouses of Puerto Morelos Mexico, the sleepy little seaside town about halfway between Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

The Leaning One

The oldest lighthouse, El Faro Inclinado, stands right at the waters edge and has become the iconic symbol of the town. When you search google for information on this wee fishing village, most of the images will return with this icon. The blue and white light house was built in 1946 as a beacon for the beautiful coral reef that is just offshore along this stretch of coast line. It stood the test of time until 1967 when Hurricane Beulah rocked its foundation, resulting in the significant lean to the tower. After unsuccessful attempts to bring the lighthouse down, it was decided to leave it in place and built a new one.

The New One

Although built in 1968, the other lighthouse is referred to as the new one.

Around the same time that it was constructed, the corridor that connects the colonias to the seaside part of Puerto Morelos was also completed. When you are walking down this corridor early in the morning, you will see the new lighthouse aglow with the pink and salmon sunbeams of the sunrise. The new one was also walloped by a hurricane, Wilma in 2005. There was damage sustained, but it was repaired and remains fully functional.

El Faro Inclinado has become such a symbol of the town, even the civic offices use the image as their logo.

The two lighthouses are only a stones throw from one another and cannot be missed. On your next adventure in this neck of the woods, be sure to stop by this fun little town and have a peek.

Have a great day!
