Iโ€™m so glad I am visiting Split for the month of May. Although I have experienced a substantial number of days that have been overcast and rainy, it’s spring and the wildflowers are blooming from every nook and cranny. Whether Iโ€™m walking through a park, or the city, there are beautiful flowers everywhere.

It's Spring and the Wildflowers Are Blooming

City Flowers

When I stroll through old town, it is hard not to see all the opportunistic plant life peeking out of tiny spaces everywhere. Snapdragons, for one, seem to grow with abandon here, something I have never experienced for. I see them constantly, with their brightly coloured little faces looking up towards the sky.

I remember playing with these as a kid in my moms garden, gently putting pressure on either side of the bloom and watching the mouth pop wide open!

With many places in old town being made of stone, it is a perfect habitat for succulents. They can easily escape notice as many are small and tucked right into the rocks.

Even in the newer parts of the city there are flowers. The municipality has been out in force putting the bedding plants into the city planters and gardens. It is beginning to get really colourful around town. Soooo pretty.

Marjan Park Flowers

In previous posts about Marjan park, I have mentioned the wildflowers. But the other day I took a rainy day walk through and I was astounded by the beauty of nature all around me.

Wow, so pretty
Pansy
Bottle brush
Poppy
Wow look at that beauty
Fluff ball grass
Can you see the beetle hiding under the yellow petal?

Even though the blossoms were drenched, they were divine. Delicate white papery petals almost transparent from the rain. A skunk cabbage type of flower making its way from the damp earth.

Everywhere I looked there were flowers. I tell you I detest rain. Anyone who knows me can attest to that. But walking in Marjan Park this day, was one of my favourite times in Split.

Marjan Park Mushrooms

Completely unexpected and entirely amazing was a bounty of mushrooms and fungi that I stumbled upon on that same rainy day. Have a look at these photos!

They were everywhere, prolific, filling my field of vision with their slimy presence. I was in heaven and felt like a kid in a candy shop.

I feel very fortunate to have spent time in Split during the spring season. It is the time of year for re-growth, re-birth and starting fresh. Sometimes I get bogged down in my mind, but spring can bring me forth. Anything can happen each spring, itโ€™s a time of change and newness.
