Its a New Year

Its a new year today. A common day to take stock, make plans, change old habits and look forward to new possibilities. This is my year. I have no big plans. I don’t know where I’m heading. I have a general idea of countries I’d like to visit, but really I’m flying by the seat of my pants. Which is not something I do easily! In fact, I have never flown by the seat of my pants! I am anti-pants!! I am a planner. If my day goes awry, its a major stressor for me.

But this is the whole idea of this journey, this next phase of my life. To live simply. To say bugger off to stress. To learn how to be chill. To enjoy the mundane.

Starting Today

On my first walk this morning, I could smell the odour from the fireworks just hours before. There were paper remnants stewen all over the streets. Black star bursts of powder decorated the pavement. There weren’t many places open but there were people out, mostly heading to church.

I moved into a new flat today. I’m really happy about that. My previous space was a little uncomfortable. I’ll elaborate more once I have left Puerto Morelos. So today has already started on a great note! I also tried something new today! I ate lamb taquitos from a street vendor that I had my eye on since the first day I wandered into the colonias. This place has a glass case set on a table, on the sidewalk. Inside the case is a skull on a thick wooden cutting board. I have been here in Puerto Morelos now for a month and I have only seen this stand open the one time.

Lucky me, today it was there! I crossed the road and peered into the case, sure enough the skull and accompanying meat was ready. The man offered me a small taste and it was delicious so I ordered a whole one. I added some onion mix and the green sauce which I thought would be milder than the red and even darker red sauce. Well for my tender pallet, this green sauce packed quite a punch. But I tell you, that taquito was amazing!!! So flavorful and juicy. Dang. I’ll definitely return if I see him again. If you want to find this place, it was located on Calle Chaca, about 4 blocks down from Chedraui.

New Year Cupcakes

And because we are talking about food, here are some New Years cupcakes that were in Chedraui.

No I didn’t partake, I was on a mission to track down some bug spray, I’m getting eaten alive! The Yucatan is basically a jungle set on limestone. The jungle thrives in this sunny damp environment. Well so do the bugs. I’m trying my darnedest to keep from getting bitten but those little suckers (literally) are there the moment I let my guard down. For tourists, you don’t have to worry about bringing spray and sun lotions, you can find all of the products here, at very reasonable prices.

Best wishes to everyone, on the year ahead. May you find adventure, peace and freedom.
