I have never been to this part of Italy before, meaning Sicily. Arriving late at night, in the dark, I didn’t have any time to form an opinion before I crashed into a deep slumber after a long day of travel. When I awoke, I arose into an Italian fairy wonderland, something I was not expecting at all. Here are my first impressions of Modica Italy.
Stunning
I have been very fortunate to find a super cute Airbnb rental situated on the highest hilltop in Modica and in the most historic area called Modica Alta. So, when I arose, and looked out the window, my breath left my body.
This town, is stunning. Its like a magical fairly tale land in Italy. I’m not kidding. Built up a steep hillside, of local, nearly white stone, are ancient medieval buildings one on top of the other. I’m looking over the oldest terra cotta roofs, weathered with algae and moss in a very arid environment. It is truly incredible.
People
Wow, so friendly and nice to me! Yay! At least half the people I pass on the street, if I make eye contact, we exchange greetings of ‘Buongiorno’. How cute is that! No rudeness, no snubbing. Even my neighbours have been so lovely and friendly.
I am in a very residential area, but within walking distance to a grocer, patisserie and produce store. There is no traffic in front of my place, cars cannot reach my door. I really feel like I am fully immersed with the locals here. I can’t express how wonderful it feels.
Exercise
You best believe I am going to leave here with stronger legs! Wow, no one was kidding when they wrote about the stairs when climbing back up to Alta! Holy moly, thigh burner.
But alas, it really hasn’t been that bad for me for one reason. I stop so darn often to take a photo, I can hardly make it up one small staircase before raising my phone to take yet another picture of a balcony, door, flower or cat. 🤣🤣🤣
Wow, I am incredibly happy that I chose this place to explore and reside for the next little while. I feel good here. I feel grounded and safe and surrounded by beauty I didn’t know existed. Oooo the pure pleasure of travel, has come true here in Modica.
