From prior research before arriving in the city, I knew I would be seeing Roman ruins here. I was surprised at just how much visible history there is to see. In fact, in addition to the theatre and stadium, I have been able to explore the largest Roman forum in Bulgaria.

The Forum

Currently, this forum has three separate areas that I can explore fully. All three have been excavated. The vibrant and busy city of Philippopolis was thriving in 100AD when Emperor Vespasian was in reign and the forum was the centre of the city. Measuring a full 20 hectares, only 11 have been excavated making it the largest Roman forum in Bulgaria.

North Forum

With three area’s currently exposed, the site with the most buildings remaining is the North Forum. When the massive post office building was being built in 1980, this part of the forum was discovered. Today, locate the post office near the Central Square and follow a staircase down that will take you directly into the ruins.

Plovdiv actually has two Roman theatres. The large one in Old Town is the most popular, but here inside the north forum, there is a beautiful little theatre. Often times, there is no one about, and I have the place to myself and any cat who wishes to have a visit.

Within this open and excavated area were the administrative buildings such as the library, civil basilica and treasury and many commercial shops.

West Forum

If you are walking along the pedestrian only road in Plovdiv, you will run into the West Forum at one end. Smaller in size than the exposed North Forum, it contains a propylaea or gateway and several ruins of shops. This area was only excavated in 2012. Bench like structures have been placed at the top side and make lovely areas to rest and enjoy a gelato.

Behind the Post Office

There is a huge exposed area of what looks like ancient roman roadways behind the current post office. After doing a little research, it appears this space will be developed soon, beautifying it, and having walkways and such built in amongst the ruins.

As it stands right now, I am able to walk down in there freely. I wouldn’t do so at night, for there are many hidden nooks around the edges that don’t look safe, but during the day, feel free to walk along a 2000 year old road! Its marvellous!

There is something so magical about walking around and climbing over these old ruins. With so little left, it is hard to get a feel for what the area once was. You can tell that the entire city of Plovdiv lies above a treasure trove of ancient Roman mystery. Walking around town, these little pockets of Rome peek out, offering a glimpse of the magic buried below.
