Walking down the main pedestrian strip of ‘Glavnata’ in Plovdiv is a must for any visitor to the city. Veer off to one side of this street at the mosque, and you may just find yourself exploring Kapana District ‘The Trap’ as it is known. In this area, were for centuries, the tailors, crafts people, leather works etc. Today the district has been transformed to a total vibe of creativity and fun.
Brief History
This is a fairly new transformation for the city. In 2019, Plovdiv was called the Cultural Centre of Europe. One of the changes that was made to the tourist part of the city, was the rejuvenation of this area called the Kapana District. The streets were closed off to vehicles, artists were encouraged to paint murals, and cafés and restaurants opened their doors.
Today
Walking through this area is so much fun. The street art alone will keep you entertained and your camera at the ready. If you go early enough in the morning, before the umbrellas have all been raised, you will have full access for photography of the art work and murals.
Nicknamed ‘The Trap’, these little streets weave in and out of each other making their exploration that much more unique.
Need an afternoon bevvie or a late-night dinner? This is the perfect neighbourhood for that. Lining every street in the district is eatery after eatery. This district comes alive at night with overhead lights, music and life. I have found the best coffee is here at this shop called ‘The Best Coffee in Town’, and the best bakery, the Kapana Bakery is nearby, just one street away.
Visitors to Plovdiv should not miss seeing the Kapana District. You might even find yourself getting a little lost in ‘The Trap’. But not to worry, wander away in any direction and you will surely find you bearings again.
Have fun!
