Every city I visit, I always end up with an enormous number of photographs of beautiful old doors. There is just something so special about the entry into a dwelling. I think it lies in the mystery behind it. Here are pictures of the best doors & windows in Salerno that I discovered in my short time there.
Palace Doors
I was shocked by the sheer size and number of absolutely massive doors in the Centro Storico neighbourhood of Salerno. I must admit, I spent most of my time here in this district, as it is the oldest and most charming part of the city.
My understanding is these huge doors were the entry into palaces of ages gone by. And wow, are they ever gorgeous. The most elaborate ones have a carved marble or stone arch surround and huge thick solid wooden double doors.
Inset in these wooden doors, are a smaller human size door, which is the actual ones I saw people emerging from each morning.
Regular Doors
There are plenty of smaller doors too, however they do get dwarfed in comparison by their cousins.
Some of my favourite doors were ones that were used for street art, adding another dimension to the already charming door itself.
Windows
In addition to my love and admiration of doors, windows are making an ever greater presence in my camera roll. I think doors & windows hold the same mystique, in that they offer a glimpse of what may lay behind, inside these private spaces.
There is no shortage of enchanting old windows in Salerno. Some of my favourites of course were the ancient ones, with inset cast iron bars. These stem from medieval times before the use of glass.
Many windows are part of an elaborate faรงade of the buildings, surrounded by exquisite plaster-work to enhance their beauty.
I do not foresee ever losing this passion for doors and windows that consumes me and my camera. Capturing their beauty and the creativity involved in decorating them will forever entertain me. So much can be understood about a culture by looking closely and the peopleโs doors and windows. They add a dimension to my enjoyment in all places I visit.
