El Corte Ingles

The largest department type store in Spain is El Corte Ingles. It’s a gorgeous shop, multiple floors and full of luxury brands and the most extensive floor of groceries and all things foodie. Besides the interior, this year in Malaga, the space outside of the shop has been converted into a Christmas market.

It comes complete with food trucks, booths selling Christmas trees, decorations, chocolates, and others with toys such as Lego and Disney. There is even a merry go round ride for the little ones to enjoy.

Historical Centre

The pedestrian only streets here have been strung with all sorts of decorative lights. During the day, these are glittery in the sunny daylight, and at night of course, they come alive with colours and bright beauty.

The main plaza has an enormous tree across from the fountain. It is the star of the plaza at this time of year attracting people under and into its centre.

Smaller alleys, people’s balconies and store fronts are decorated with garland, bows, baubles and lights, creating a more intimate feel to the season.

Calle Larios

The main attraction though? Without a doubt its Calle Larios. With massive angels strung all the way from old town to the plaza at the port, it’s a sight to behold. During the daytime, absolutely gorgeous as the petals and leaves of the garland shimmer in the bright warm sunshine. Walking under this tunnel of angels, one feels light and lucky.

Each night, at 6:30 and 8:30pm, the street is teeming with visitors, all waiting for the Christmas music to begin. I can tell you it’s a glorious time to be there.

A handful of songs are played. Some in English and others in Spanish. People are dancing, kids are laughing and the atmosphere is one of joviality and good cheer.

These are the experiences I will remember the most from Malaga. It’s a city that has gone above and beyond with holiday decorations and the spirit of Three Kings Day. Beautiful lights, crowds of people bundled up in scarves and hats, sparkles, smiles and lots of love.
