Why yes there are! If fact I have come across three so far in my daily walk-a-bout towns. Now I’m not going to lie and say they are the most beautiful I have seen, but attract sun seekers they do. So, are there any beaches in Salerno? Here is what I have found.
Spiaggia Santa Teresa
This beach in Salerno is possible the most accessible, being right in the city. If you walk along the esplanade towards Piazza della Liberta, you will pass by this stretch of sand on your left. Packed with sun lovers by mid morning, it is a nice stretch of beach.
Dark sand and a little trashy, walking is easy here as the sand is quite compact and hard. You will find vendors of various items and can rent a chair if you wish.
I was down here this morning in fact and was chased away by a dog. The lovely Italian woman yelling ‘He no bite!’, but if you have read my post about my fear of dogs, you will understand why I did not hang around to be jumped on repeatedly.
Porto Turistico
This next little piece of beach, is in fact tiny and most likely not officially a beach. Tucked inside one corner of Porto Turistico, if you are not looking carefully, you might indeed miss it. Both mornings I walked the esplanade, I found people swimming and bathing from the wee hours of the morning.
It is a small but obviously popular little piece of real estate. With small rocks and a bit of sand, you could spend a few hours here watching the world go by. There is even a little café set up right beside the walkway and pier.
Conchiglia Beach
Not officially the name of the beach, but instead the name of a gorgeous beach club right at this spot called Lido la Conchiglia. On either side of the club however, are public areas with beautiful stretches of black sand! Yes, black volcanic sand and it is gorgeous and soft.
You could walk down here for quite a way if the tide was cooperating. There are rocky patches but in between are glorious little stretches of sand. I see folks down here from early in the day, setting up their space. An uninterrupted view of the sea and mountains is what greats you all day long.
These are the only beaches I have seen walking from where I am situated in Old Town down the esplanade for one hour. I can see there are more beaches in Salerno further down, and perhaps one day if I have the time I will explore further afield.
There is so much to do and see in Salerno, I’m finding I’m running short on days, something I haven’t experienced before. Perhaps this means I will have to return one day. 😊
