One of the most interesting parts of this first taste of Vietnam for me, has been to see the huge variety of things to eat. So many of which are completely new to me and half of which I don’t know what they are. 🤣 Walking around, especially near the markets I have seen some amazing street food in Vietnam.
Food on Sticks
Many of the items for sale as street food come on a stick. What a perfect way to partake of saucy & sticky delicacies, without getting ones fingers dirty or your food germy! Here are some of my favourite photos of stick food.
Food Balls
I’m not sure why this is, but so much of the food available as street food comes in the shape of a ball. Perhaps it is just an easy shape to make, rolling one’s hands together. But I love it. Seeing all of these different coloured but almost perfectly unison balls is super enticing.
Seafood
I didn’t grow up eating very much seafood at all. My pallet is very naïve when it comes to creatures from the sea. Because of this, I am quite wary of trying new fish and their companions. I haven’t learned to like the fishy fish taste and this is why I usually shy away from ordering some of these unique looking foods.
Meat
Every part of the animal is used here, as it should be. Well, I supposed it is used in the west too, just hidden in hotdogs and sandwich meat etc. Here in Vietnam, you will see all parts of the animal, feet, nose, ears, face, hoofs etc. And some more unusual meats like frog and land snails.
Sweets
Just about everything here seems to have sugar added. Now that isn’t a surprise for these sweets, but it was a culinary surprise for the meat dishes I have enjoyed. Stopping at the doughnut carts is a must for me. The sesame covered ball had a sweet pasty filling. It was delicious but so sweet and greasy my teeth hurt. 😂
Travelling Vietnam for the past three weeks has been an eye-opening experience in every way. A truly positive one. I have been drawn to all thing’s food related. Everything has been unique in flavour, in looks and in cooking style. What a terrific and interesting country this is. Can’t wait to return one day to explore more.
