Today is February 24th, that means it is a special day for Mexico! This morning we all gathered for a celebration in Sayulita, Happy Flag Day! On this day every year since 1937, the Mexican people honour their beautiful flag and everything that it represents.

A Celebration in Sayulita, Happy Flag Day!

The Parade

I went for a walk this morning, down to the town square, found a place on the curb and waited anxiously for the parade to start. I had no idea what to expect or when it might begin.

At 10:30am a police siren could be heard approaching the square. Sure enough, a vehicle rounded the corner, and to the delight of everyone, the parade was upon us.

Behind the popo car was a group of dignitaries carrying the big Mexican flag. Coming up on their heels were a group of elders, dressed in red, green and white shirts, representing the colours on the flag. Next was an amazing Mexican band, playing the best, most iconic live music.

Starting with Pre-hispanica

After these groups settled into place, we were entertained by multiple sets of school children, dressed to represent the different time periods that the country has seen since pre-hispanica. The faces of the children were so sweet and lovely. Of course the parade was teeming with colour, music and waving flags.

Ending with Current day

After the children had arrived, the dancing horses came forward! Many riders were dressed in traditional cowboy regalia, with carved silver saddles, reins and hardware. The sound of the horses hooves dancing on the cobblestones was magnificent. What beautiful creatures.

The parade ended with the singing of the national anthem and horse dancing in front of the bandstand that was set up near the square. I am told that celebrations will continue on all day and into the night with dancing, and lots of banda music. In fact a banda competition! I know banda, having heard it before. I have the ear plugs ready. ๐Ÿ™‚
