Never one to miss a market anywhere in the world I travel, there are two that I need to tell visitors about. Bursting with fresh foods and other goods, these are the perfect venue to sample local produce. The best of Duncan’s farmers markets will leave your tastebuds doing a happy dance.

The Best of Duncan's Farmers Markets
Duncan’s Farmers Markets

Saturday Market

The first is located right in downtown Duncan, at City Hall, and takes place on every Saturday of the year. Open from 9am to 2pm, be sure to arrive early, especially in the summer months, for the best selection. Two roads are closed to vehicles and vendors are set up on both sides of these. Farm to table fruits and vegetables are the stars of the show. With their bright colours and irresistible appeal, locals quickly fill their bags with the bounty.

Duncan’s Farmers Markets

Fresh cut and dried flowers fill the air with their fragrance. A bakery stall is always a fan favourite and has a line with myself included in it.

Local crafts people are selling their wares. Beautiful hand made pottery, soaps, leather goods, glass, jewellery and so much more.

Don’t forget to take home a bottle of wine or liquor from the local vineyards and distilleries. The Cowichan Valley has become a beacon of small enterprises creating amazing products.

The Saturday market is dog friendly, and this day I even spotted a bird in a backpack! What fun to walk around, discovering unique products and tasting all the things.

Old Farm Market

The second market I love in the area is called The Old Farm Market and is open seven days a week. Located just south of Duncan on the highway, it’s a winner for several reasons. Not only does it support local farmers and sell their produce, but it’s a full stop shop. Find a café, pizza place, ice cream bar, coffee shop and second-hand clothing store.

Old Farm Market has been around for over 30 years and is a staple for the community. Inside the big red barn, find all of the fresh fruits and vegetables, a deli, the small café and a large selection of unique grocery items.

In front of the barn is Zza’s Pizza. Do not miss this place! Wow, an incredible venture run by the friendliest local couple. They are creating unique pizza’s bursting with flavour. For dinner one evening, I purchased two to share with my children, the pepperoni and the prosciutto. These have to be the best pizzas in town, by far.

The second building located beside the barn, houses all of the other entities. Serving local Island Farms ice cream and a wide selection of coffee and baked goods. Take a seat at the picnic tables outside and enjoy these goodies.

If you find yourself either in Duncan or just passing through, be sure to stop at either of these two markets. The Saturday one is unique with authentic with friendly vibes. The Old Farm Market, the perfect place for scoring delicious eats and treats. Frequented by both visitors and locals alike, they are sure to bring joy to your day.
