I first visited this amazing country two years ago. It was near the beginning of this incredible adventure I have undertaken. Coming from three months in Mexico, this entry into Europe was one of unexpected pleasure. I had never seen a country quite like this and instantly fell in love. Having never forgotten the magic I felt, I have been itching to return. Here are my second impressions of Malta.

Tourists

Woah, where did they all come from? There are so many more now. I was not expecting this. The last time I was here, Malta almost had the feeling of being undiscovered. Of course, the capital Valletta was busy, but elsewhere felt sleepy. Not so any more.

My Uber driver was very talkative on the way from the airport and he has filled me in on all of the issues and troubles that the locals have been facing. Not only from tourists but from a rise in immigration that has not been handled well by the government. What ever the issues are, there is definitely a lot more people walking around and loads more vehicular traffic.

Beauty

Its still here in spades. Right away I am surrounded by these charming ancient streets. I have chosen to stay in the three cities area once again. I can barely afford the prices, well can’t actually, I’m really stretching the budget this time.

But to be engulfed by these gorgeous medieval buildings made of limestone with the colourful balconies, doors and windows is worth every penny. I’m fully immersed in a neighbourhood where the locals live, not where the tourist hotels, malls and such are, and I love it.

Prices

High, much higher than two years ago. This goes for accommodation and food, the two things that have affected me the most so far. I have had a little visit to my local market and the prices of the fresh produce are easily double what I was paying before. Ouch.

I’m definitely going to have to shop around and find some cheaper eats. No restaurant meals unfortunately and only one or two coffee treats out is all I will be able to manage.

It is always interesting for me to return to a destination. Part of me feels like I’ve come back home. The familiarity is a rare feeling but one that is special. To wander these narrow streets, greeting the locals with a smile and having that returned is just how I remember it. I feel good here, surrounded by beauty, the Mediterranean sea and all of this glorious Maltese sunshine.
