Readers will already know of my admiration of doors. Where ever I travel, I notice and photograph front and gate doors, usually of homes. I can positively tell you that there are some outstanding doors in Sayulita!
Front Doors
I think of front doors sort of like eyes. They are a window of sorts, an entry into an unknown place. Most front doors that I photograph are closed and I prefer them that way. While I would desperately like to be able to see the interior of some of these homes, I like knowing the owner is tucked away inside. Being able to secret yourself away into a personal oasis is my perfect definition of what a home should offer.
When you first meet a person, you generally are looking at their eyes. Looking at a casa’s front door, therefore is akin to looking at one’s eyes. Sometimes the eyes are welcoming, sometimes not. Some doors look warm and inviting and others are clearly cold and un-accepting.
Decor
The decor adorning a door is definitely part of the package. Rarely is a door the stand alone feature. Often times there are planters, knockers, bells, light fixtures and other beautiful Mexican decorations.
Being in Mexico and being visually assaulted every day with the brightest of colours, many of the doors I photograph are bright and vivid. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
After seeing so many mundane doors in my home country, I am in colour heaven here in Mexico. Sayulita in particular is extremely dry at the moment. There are hardly any flowers around town and those that are are made dull with the dust. Almost everything in town is covered with a fine to downright thick blanket of dust.
I think this makes the brightly coloured doors here stand out even more than usual. I may make another post yet as I make my way through the town, discovering more neighbourhoods and delighting in my discoveries.
