Being a budget traveller, I am always on the lookout for free things to do in every destination I go to. Spending weeks instead of days in places, allows me to discover things that I would not normally find on a short trip. Here are 6 more free things to do in Plovdiv that I have discovered from my explorations of the city.
Clock Hill
There are 5 hills in Plovdiv that the city was built in the midst of. One of these is Sahat Tepe or in Bulgarian, ‘Caxat’. For visitors spending only a day or two, this hill is super close to the pedestrian walk, and offers amazing views of the city. Finding the ‘Together 2019’ sign, climb those steps. Immediately in front of you is a walkway, start climbing. At the top is a working clock tower that has been there in some form or another since the 1600’s! Enjoy the 360 degree views of this beautiful city.
Thursday Market
I always visit at least one market in every place I land. For me, markets offer a true glimpse into the culture of a people. What they are growing, producing and purchasing is so interesting. The ‘Thursday Market’, is actually open every day except for Sundays.
Simply follow the pedestrian path until you get to what you think is the end. Look for the tunnel to take you under that street. Turn to your left and walk one block and you will see people walking towards the market. Enjoy seeing local flowers, produce and various local food products like honey and preserves. The fruits and veg here is the freshest in the city.
Maritsa River
The longest river in the Balkans runs right through Plovdiv! It is the Maritsa River. Flowing fairly slowly and quite shallow this time of year, it is a lovely site away from the hustle and bustle of the city. A beautiful path exists between Fair Bridge and Train Bridge, perfect for a leisurely stroll. Needing a workout? Beside the path is an outdoor gym and climbing rocks. Or have a seat on one of the many benches and watch fishermen in the river catching their meal for the day.
Train Bridge
The most interesting of the 6 bridges in Plovdiv is Train Bridge. Originally it was uncovered, but in the 1980’s, it was decided to erect a structure and line each side with stores. Train Bridge became the nickname because the covering made the bridge resemble a train. In fact, it is pedestrian only. Come here for a unique shopping experience only found in Plovdiv.
Dzhumaya Mosque
One of only a few buildings left in the city since it was ruled by the Ottoman Empire in the 1300’s, is the Dzhumaya Mosque right in the centre of the pedestrian only strip. You will not miss this imposing and beautiful building when walking around the tourist area. There are only a few remnants of the old decorated plaster that once covered the exterior. And don’t be shy, if the doors are open, you can have a look inside too. Just remember to remove your shoes.
Singing Fountains
Running all summer long on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 9pm sharp, are the Singing Fountains located in Tsar Simeon’s Garden. When I attended it was near the summer solstice, so the sky was not completely dark. But I have to say, accompanied by beautiful classical music, it was a really lovely experience. The man-made lake is surrounded by lush gardens and benches. Plenty of seats to enjoy this little bit of magic in the city.
I hope these things will give you some ideas of things to do in Plovdiv. I spend a part of every day, just walking around, exploring and stretching my boundaries. When I find treasures, I pass them on to you dear readers.
Happy and safe travels.
