6 Free Things to Do in Phuket Thailand
View from Rang Hill Viewpoint

Monkey Hill

A hike up a hill and the chance to not only see monkeys but to interact with them too if you wish. This hill is just north of the old town. It was one hour from my home on Thalang Road in the old city to the top of the mountain. There are multiple outdoor gyms all the way to the top, so if you are looking for a good workout, this is for you.

Monkeys galore! At the security gate near the bottom, you can read signs about what to do and not to do. Please respect these rules, they are here for your safety. I would advise against taking anything other than your phone. Remove jewellery or other items you donโ€™t want stolen.

The monkeys are numerous, especially towards the top. They are curious, cute and inquisitive and if you bend down to take a photo, they will approach. Have fun!

Old Town

Oh easily my favourite part of the city. What a charming and beautiful area to reside for a short while. Yes, it is packed with tourists, especially after lunch time, however the architecture that surrounds you will make up for it.

These old shophouses were made by the Chinese for the Portuguese and have created a unique architectural style called Sino-Portuguese. Streets of brightly coloured buildings, ornate balconies and detailed facades await you. Walk these streets leisurely, take photos, and bask in all that is historical on this little island in Thailand.

Phuket City View Point

Another hike, but this one about half the rise as Monkey Hill. Look for Rang Hill on google maps. This climb is curvy and can take a while depending on the route you go. Along the way is a gorgeous Buddhist temple with a huge golden Buddha to see.

At the top is a stunning viewpoint, complete with a walk out area, large pagoda and park, with, you guessed it, monkeys. ๐Ÿ˜‚ While not nearly as numerous as Monkey Hill, they are cheeky. I witnessed one pulling a bag from a motorbike. He and his pals proceeded to pull out everything from said bag, eat what they could and distribute the rest around the parking lot.

Shrine of the Serene Light

You may have visited multiple Buddhist temples in Thailand but what about a shrine? Here in Phuket, 36% of the population is ethnic Chinese and you will quite quickly notice the multitude of Chinese shrines. The Serene Light, built in 1889, is a hidden secret as it cannot be seen from the road.

In years past only two small hidden passages led through buildings to reach the shrine, but today, there is a relatively large set of flags at the street, marking one entrance, so much easier to find.

Inside the courtyard is absolutely gorgeous, one of the few shrines left that still uses decorative clay tiles on the roof. Walk around and see all of the gorgeous icons, statues and beautiful tidbits that are present here.

Phuket City Public Market 2

Be prepared, this is a very authentic experience. A market with all things food related on two floors, large indoor area and covered outdoor space too. I love markets, but this one was a bit difficult for me I wonโ€™t lie. It is extremely interesting because of the high percentage of Muslims and Chinese who live on the island. There is such a huge variety of ingredients here.

Donโ€™t wear good shoes, this is a dirty place, full of unsavoury liquids on the ground. The meat and seafood section is extensive and these areas are not clean. The stench is overpowering, thick with innards and excrement and dried fish. But if you can stomach all that, you can see marvellously interesting items for sale.

Sunday Night Walking Street Market

Located in the centre of Old Town on Thalang Road, this is the place to be on a Sunday evening. Opening at 4pm and not closing until 11, visitors can view the sunset through these beautiful old streets.

Walk around and have a look at all that is for sale, unique items and the usual elephant pants etc. Where this market really comes alive is the street food. Let your eyes feast on all of the amazing treats. From soft colourful crepes loaded with cream, to live jumping shrimp salad. This is a people watching Disneyland for sure. Listen to music, watch street performers and relax into all things Phuket.

I hope this gives readers some ideas on what they can do in Phuket city. I have yet to see a beach which is the reason most visitors come to the island. ๐Ÿ˜‚ The city and Old Town have kept me too busy and too entertained. Enjoy!
