Being a budget traveller, I usually end up googling my destinations to see what I can do for little to no money. One of my purposes in my travels now, is to provide fellow travellers with things that I have found and enjoyed. Here are my 5 free things to do & see in Tivat.
Submarines
I discovered these on my first day in Tivat and they are super cool! Located outside of the Maritime Heritage Museum, you can walk right up to them, explore their exteriors and take as many pictures as you wish. The largest sub is a P-821 Hero, both are old Yugoslav submarines.
Zupa Park
Walking the coastline from Tivat in the direction of the airport, you will encounter a forested site full of towering pine trees. This is Zupa Park and is a gorgeous old estate with a private beach.
The grounds are full of nice wide paths and if you climb up the gentle hill, you will discover the abandoned renaissance mansion of the Bizanti family! Not only that but scattered throughout the entire property are numerous other buildings including the remnants of the told stone church.
I felt comfortable going inside and exploring this cool old residence, being careful of where I trod, for the ground is covered in debris and broken glass.
Porto Montenegro
A luxurious marina that opened in 2006 and is full of stunning super yachts, a gorgeous 5-star hotel, many seaside restaurants and some shopping.
I have enjoyed walking the promenade and piers in Porto Montenegro just about every morning. Seeing those beautiful yachts, sailboats and ships glistening in the morning light is a sight to behold. The area is friendly, super clean and a gorgeous place to wander around and take in the sights.
Buca Lukovic
The coastline around Tivat was home to noble families of the medieval era, building their summer mansions and palaces here. One such residence is the Buca Lukovic site located right in the centre of Tivat city. Still remaining are three buildings, the watch tower, chapel and a building that now houses a gallery and ethnographic museum. Entrance into the garden area is free and walking around the exterior, it is lovely to explore these old stone structures, cannons and grounds.
Right beside this is the City Park, another free and peaceful place to explore. The site is full of huge 100-year-old pine trees which provide a lovely aroma and ample shade should you need a break from the sunshine.
Vrmac Mountain
Behind the city of Tivat is the Vrmac Mountain full of hiking trails from beginner to extreme. Located up on the mountain are several abandoned stone churches and at least two Austro-Hungarian forts that are free to enter and explore.
If you are an avid hiker or just want to wander through the natural landscape for a bit, this is the perfect place to do so. You can even hike to the ancient town of Kotor on the other side of the peninsula. I highly recommend using insect repellent before your adventure.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here in Tivat. This has been my first venture into Montenegro and I will surely return. I have found the people incredibly helpful and friendly, the surroundings breathtakingly beautiful and the vibe fun and carefree.
