Always on the lookout for free activities to keep me busy and my frugal pocket appeased, these posts are some of my favourites to create. I’ll make at least one for each destination I visit. Here are 5 free things to do in Mostar Bosnia that are unique and fun.
Sniper Tower
There is quite a lot of war damage that can still be seen when one is exploring the city. The Sniper Tower is one of these buildings. Originally a bank, when the Bosnian war began in 1992, it was the tallest building in the city.
Located on the west bank of the Naretva River this abandoned building will give you the chills. It was used by the Croats to defend their side of the river during the 2nd Siege in Mostar.
Today, sniper tower stands in place, covered in bullet holes and creatively decorated with graffiti both inside and out. The building has been boarded up and wire placed in the lower windows, after a boy fell to his death a few years prior.
I witnessed many tourists climbing into the structure to investigate and explore. Do so at your own risk, for the elevator shaft is a seven-story void and the central stairwell is wide open. I chose to stay on the outside of this one, my heart could not take the emotional toil of seeing the views from up high.
Gimnasija Mostar
Built in 1893 during Austro-Hungarian rule, this big beautiful building began life as a school and remains one to this day. The architectural style is Moorish Revival and is most splendid early in the day when the sunlight first catches those warm hues and sets it aglow.
Originally the school only had three teachers including a biologist and a philologist, but by the next year, also included a Catholic and Muslim teacher and then a Jewish teacher. For an added bonus, walk next door for a view of the lighter coloured City Hall.
Zrinjevac Park
For a peaceful respite during your stay, wander over to Zrinjevac Park. Located quite close to the Sniper Tower, this large and beautiful green space is full of serenity.
Included here are fountains, an extensive playground for the kiddos and multiple cafés to enjoy a beverage on a hot summer’s day. There are a few statues, two that stand out are the large Easter egg, and the currently missing statue of Bruce Lee, yes that one. He was kidnapped earlier this year and was purportedly cut in half.
There are multiple benches to rest upon, paths to stroll through the shaded spaces and even a wide stone walkway that showcases various displays throughout the year.
Fortica Skywalk
Drive into and up Fortica Park on Ostri Rat hill (or hike) to see some magnificent views. At the summit is the Fortica Skywalk, a glass floored frame that spans out over the valley below. I can tell you, on a clear day the panoramic scenery is breathtaking. At no cost, this is simply a stunning way to see the city and pastoral mountain range.
Austro Hungarian Fortress
Facing the café with your back to Fortica Skywalk, look to your left and take a small path that goes through the knee high grass. Keep walking for a short way, possibly 10 minutes and you will discover an old Austro-Hungarian fortress! Here is a stone fort with three consecutive arches that offers magnificent scenic views over the deep valley below. Built in the late 19th century, this fort was used for defensive purposes.
There are so many things to see in Mostar besides the Old Town. Visitors will have lots to explore in this beautiful Bosnian city. Being the 5th largest in the country, there is an endless number of activities and festivals too, as the seasons change.
